How to get scholarships for Indian students to study abroad


Indians who want to study abroad at undergraduate and postgraduate levels have plenty of scholarship options available from UK, US and other universities. Learn about some of the top scholarships available to you, and visit the MHRD website for more.

Are you looking to study abroad at the undergraduate or postgraduate level? While in the past Indians would go abroad for postgraduate degrees after completing their undergraduate education at home, and after gaining a few years of work experience, these days more and younger Indians are seeking undergraduate education abroad.



One of the reasons for this new trend is the increase in availability of good scholarships for undergraduates. Not only are students pursuing traditional higher education courses in US and UK universities, but also seeking vocational training in Australia and elsewhere.

UK Scholarships


Chevening Scholarships, Postgraduate

These scholarships are funded by the FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) and other organizations for the UK government's global scholarship program. Under the Chevening Scholarship program, outstanding students from around the world, with great potential for leadership, are invited for postgraduate courses at UK universities.

Founded in 1983, the program is highly regarded in academic circles around the world. Over 40,000 alumni have been a part of the program, and the Chevening alumni are highly respected globally. The Chevening Scholarships provide part or full funding for full-time PG courses at any university in the UK, on any subject.

Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan, Postgraduate and Doctoral

This scholarship is aimed at students from Commonwealth countries, who can make a significant contribution to their home country after completing higher education in the UK. The Commonwealth Scholarships Commission funds the program, and managed jointly by the British Council, Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Ministry of Human Resource Development India.

The program offers assistance for one year Master's courses or Doctoral degrees of up to three years, covering tuition fee, travel expenses, maintenance and other allowances. Subjects for which scholarship is offered include pure and applied science, engineering and technology, humanities and social sciences and agriculture. The eligibility criteria is for potential candidates to not be over 40 years of age, and have the selection process is through shortlisting of applications by the MHRD, Department of Education and Government of India, followed by a personal interview in New Delhi.

Hornby Scholarships

The Hornby Scholarships are offered by the A.S. Hornby Educational Trust of the UK, for students wishing to study a postgraduate ELT (English Language Training) course. The scholarship covers the tuition fee. Candidates who apply are required to have a minimum 6.5 IELTS score and should have been accepted by a UK university. Applicants are also required to have 5 years of experience as an English language trainer or teacher, or experience in developmental work as managers or trainers.

Other Global Scholarships


Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarships Program

The Aga Khan scholarships are meant for outstanding students from developing countries to pursue postgraduate education, with preference given to students below 30 years of age. The scholarship aims to prepare the awardees for employment, particularly within the AKDN (Aga Khan Development Network) which is a group of developmental agencies devoted to rural development, health, education, environment, culture, architecture, microfinance and other mandates across the world.

The scholarships offered are granted on a 50 percent grant and 50 percent loan basis. Priority is given to students seeking Master's level education, but those who are recommended for PhD by their professors are also given special consideration. The Aga Khan Foundation assists students only with living expenses and tuition, not travel expenses. The payback of half the scholarship amount is required within 5 years of completing the study period that has been funded by the foundation.

USIEF Scholarships

Indians who want to study in US universities have access to a number of scholarships such as the Brandes University Scholarship (for postgraduate studies) and the Tata Scholarship for Cornell University (for undergraduate studies), funded by the United States India Educational Foundation. For graduates seeking postgraduate or post doctoral studies, the University of California Berkeley Fellowships are also offered by the USIEF.



There are several other scholarships that Indian candidates can apply for in their quest for higher education outside India. The author has outlined main scholarships available to aspiring students for studies in foreign countries. In addition to these scholarships many other forms of financial aids are available to outstanding and meritorious students. Such financial aids in the form of fellowships, graduate assistant ships and research assistant ships are provided by many US universities to deserving students.
